Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay Zakat?

Every Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). You can see today’s Nisab at the top of this page.

What is the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is voluntary and can be given at any time. Zakat is an obligation: 2.5% of eligible wealth, paid every year, and one of the five pillars of Islam.

What is Nisab?

The minimum wealth you must own before Zakat is due. It’s based on the value of gold or silver, so it changes with market prices.

Can I pay my Zakat monthly?

Yes, as long as the full amount is paid within your Zakat year. Sponsoring an orphan is one good way to do it.

Does Muslim Hands take a cut of my Zakat?

Up to 10% may cover the cost of delivering it (the ‘amil share), as the Qur’an allows. Everything else reaches eligible people.
